Some of my personal favorites - the small but lethal Spike and the eternally pissed off Angry Sun - appeared here for the first time, making the third Mario Bros. More and more enemies popped up in Mario 3, each better than the next. The concept of bosses wasn't new to the Mario series by this point, but the thrill of a more dynamic fight with Bowser's children was. These little bastards would square off with you one-on-one, attempting to blast you with their stolen magic wands. It wasn't enough just to fight Bowser in this epic sequel, so Nintendo gave him kids - seven of them, to be precise. Mario 3 will always be incredible in my mind because of the Koopalings. Though Mario 3 and Mario World work with many of the koopas and goombas established in the original game, both titles expanded greatly on the mythology of the Mushroom Kingdom. 3 Now what's your pick? Which Mario game has the better abilities? I think Yoshi is as awesome as the next Nintendo fan, but if you ask me, I'd rather be able to turn into a stone statue or hurl hammers all over the screen. ![]() In the end, it's a tale of suits versus a green dinosaur. Though Mario could still fly with the help of a feather, the bulk of in-game upgrades came courtesy of Mario's new friend, who could also ingest different color shells to access new types of powers. ![]() Mario World introduced a very different type of upgrade for our hero - a dinosaur by the name of Yoshi. The first two have proven particularly enduring with fans, even being the focus of Nintendo's teaser logo for the upcoming Super Mario 3D Land. The Italian plumber's last major NES appearance introduced iconic power-ups like the Raccoon, Tanooki and Hammer suits. Outside of the power mushroom, invincibility star and fire flower, Mario's most popular upgrades come from Mario 3 and Mario World. ![]()
